Fit 4 U Project

During April, May and June, people with physical and/or sensory disabilities from across the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, have been participating in a range of physical activity and leisure opportunities at local leisure centres and parks, as part of the  Trust’s  funded Fit 4 U Project.

Fit 4 U aims to empower people with physical/sensory disabilities to improve their health through participation in a range of physical activity and leisure opportunities.  Activities have included boccia, new age kurling, tennis, physical activities and walking programmes at Dungannon Park, Lurgan Park and Kilbroney Park.

Rhonda Richardson, Fit 4 U Project Officer with the Southern Trust explains: “the walks were a great opportunity for people to get out into fresh air and benefit their physical, mental and social health, through walking and socialising with others.”

Rhonda added that: “Boccia, which is a seated form of bowls and inclusive of people of all abilities, now takes place in each area on a monthly basis.”

Seamus Boyle, participant, explains: “Boccia is very relaxing and a good way to meet other people.  I enjoy playing the game, the competition involved and because it is a seated sport, everybody can play.”

Patricia McMahon, participant, said: “Boccia is great for meeting other people and for exercise.”

The Fit 4 U Project is a Southern Health and Social Care Trust partnership led project, which involves a range of partners within the SHSCT, the 5 Councils in this area and service users with disabilities.
