Multi-Sports Event for adults with physical/sensory disabilities

The Southern Trust Fit 4 U Project recently held a range of multi-sports for adults with physical/sensory disabilities aged 18 years plus who live in the Southern Trust area.  Participants enjoyed a combination of target sports including kurling, netball, tennis and boccia skills.

The Project aims to empower people with physical/sensory disabilities to improve their health and wellbeing through participation in a range of day time physical activity and leisure opportunities to include: archery, boccia, new age kurling, fitness, tennis, boxercise and golf.   Activities are held in Dungannon, Armagh, Craigavon, Banbridge, Newry and Mourne leisure centres.

Frances Kelly who participated on the day reflects on her experience:  “I have gained a lot more confidence since I joined the Fit 4 U Project.  The sports activities are tailored to meet the needs of disabled people.  The volunteers are more than helpful and it is great fun to participate in the various activities and socialise with other disabled people.  I have also found the sports activities very beneficial for my health and wellbeing.  I would encourage others to come along and give it a go!”

Joan O’Hare, Volunteer with the Project explains:  “As a Volunteer, I support people with disabilities to do physical activities.  It gives me great satisfaction and the opportunity to socialise with people with disabilities.”

Gerard Rocks, Acting Assistant Director for Promoting Wellbeing said: “This project is about increasing access and choice to physical activity opportunities for people with a physical or sensory disability.  Fit 4 U has facilitated a diverse range of social and leisure, opportunities within Leisure centres across the Trust area enhancing choice and access for people with disabilities. It has been wonderful to hear directly from the individuals how the project has helped improve their health and wellbeing and increased their participation within the community. It has been such a positive experience for so many people.”

The Fit 4 U Project is funded by the Public Health Agency and led by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in partnership with other organisations, including the five local Council authorities.  The multi-sports sessions have been led by Sport NI funded Active Communities coaches.
