HEALTH MINISTER EDWIN POOTS CONGRATULATES WILLOWBANK FOR 50 YEARS OF SERVICE

Health Minister Edwin Poots today visited the Willowbank Community Resource Centre in Dungannon to view the work that is undertaken in helping people with disabilities. Speaking at Willowbank, Minister Poots said:

“Willowbank has a long history of delivering for people with disabilities. I have been impressed by the dedication of the staff and the determination of the clients as they strive to manage their disabilities. It is particularly fitting that I visit during Willowbank’s 50 years in operation celebrations.

I am committed to a sustainable health care system that delivers for everyone in Northern Ireland and patients will always be my priority.

Last June I initiated a major review of our Health and Social Care system to examine the future provision of services and ensure we had a safe, resilient and sustainable system for the long term. The report of the review of Health and Social Care services “Transforming Your Care”, which was launched in December 2011, is the blueprint for a health and social care system where patients will receive the right care in the right place at the right time and by the right people.”

The Minister launched the Department of Health, ‘Quality Strategy – Quality 2020’ in November last year to create a new framework and plan of action to protect and improve quality in health and social care over the next 10 years and beyond. The Minister concluded:

“Willowbank is a good example of a service that is driven by people. This is integral to my vision for real partnership between health and social care agencies and those who use our services.”

Notes to EDITOR:

1. Willowbank Ltd is a company limited by guarantee having no share capital. Run as a social enterprise, services are designed and implemented in partnership with the identified needs, aspirations and expectations of the end service user.

2. DHSSPS published a Physical and Sensory Disability Strategy and Action Plan in February 2012.

3. The Strategy sets out the strategic direction for the further development of services and support for disabled people over the next three years (2012 – 2015) and the Action Plan contains the key actions with associated timescales for the delivery of these service.
