DAVID MCCONNELL
Since leaving school David worked in a building merchants, but due to ill health he could no longer work in this industry. He realised he needed to retrain to be able to return to work in a vocational area that suited his health condition. He became aware of Clanrye Retail Social Enterprise through the SHSCT and commenced training in 2011 to build new skills, gain qualifications and avail of practical work experience in the social enterprise gift shop `Heart & Home’. Due to David’s bubbly personality he quickly settled into the project and worked tirelessly not only to progress himself but to promote the social enterprise to the general public. His enthusiasm and passion for his role in the shop ensured he accelerated his training and acquired many qualifications in the time he spent on the programme. He achieved an NVQ Diploma in Retail Skills Level 2 and a range of other qualifications to include Essential Skills in ICT, Numeracy and Literacy. He also took up a number of external work placements to include a local men’s clothes shop, Louis Boyd and Debenhams. David stated “this course has helped me to be more assertive and confident. It also helped me to work well on my own and with other people.”
