Fit 4 U Project- Golf Programme
During the summer months, the Southern Trust’s Fit 4 U Project co-ordinated a Golf Programme, at Armagh Golf Club. The golf programme was specifically for people with physical and/or sensory disabilities and utilised Starting New at Golf (SNAG) equipment. The programme was facilitated by PGA coach, Tony Murtagh.
The Fit 4 U Project aims to empower people with physical/sensory disabilities to improve their health through participation in a range of physical activity and leisure opportunities.
Rhonda Richardson, Fit 4 U Project Officer for the Southern Trust, explains: “SNAG golf equipment is very inclusive and excellent for those new to the sport of golf. It contains all the elements of golf but in a modified form and can be utilised indoors or outdoors. A range of adapted golf clubs are available which allow for full shots, pitching, chipping, and putting.
John McKenna, participant explains: “golf is good for mental health, good for mobility, exercise and socially mixing with people with disabilities. Our coach Tony Murtagh makes everyone welcome and it is a fun activity.”
Liam Ward, participant adds: “since I have been diagnosed with epilepsy, I have had both mental and physical problems. After joining Fit 4 U I have experienced a challenge and an interest and also a chance to meet other people who also have disabilities. The programme works very well and staff are very keen and enthusiastic.”
The Fit 4 U Project is funded by the Public Health Agency and led by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in partnership with other organisations
